Phnom Penh [Cambodia], July 26 (ANI): The Embassy of India in Cambodia issued a travel advisory on Saturday, urging Indian nationals to avoid traveling to border areas due to ongoing clashes along the Thailand-Cambodia border.
In an official statement, the Embassy said, “In view of the ongoing clashes at the Cambodia-Thailand border, Indian nationals are advised to avoid travelling to the border areas.”
The Embassy also advised Indian citizens to contact them in case of emergencies, providing a helpline number and email: +855 92881676 and [email protected].
Earlier on Friday, the Indian Embassy in Thailand issued a similar advisory following violent clashes near the border. That advisory specifically urged Indian nationals to avoid traveling to seven provinces in Thailand. It also encouraged travelers to monitor official updates from Thai sources such as the TAT Newsroom, the online news portal of the Tourism Authority of Thailand.
The advisories follow escalating tensions between Cambodia and Thailand, where renewed border clashes have triggered a major humanitarian crisis. According to CNN, more than 100,000 people have been forced to flee their homes within just two days of conflict.
The border dispute, rooted in colonial-era maps from France’s occupation of Cambodia until 1953, has long been a source of contention. Cambodia cites the French-drawn maps to support its claims, while Thailand rejects them as inaccurate.
Both countries have submitted letters to the United Nations Security Council (UNSC), prompting the 15-member body to schedule an emergency meeting on Saturday. Cambodia has accused Thailand of initiating the conflict by violating prior agreements, while Thailand claims Cambodia escalated the situation by deploying surveillance drones.
The UNSC has confirmed the meeting will be held privately under the “Threats to international peace and security” agenda. Representatives from both countries are expected to participate under Rule 37 of the Council’s procedures.
