New York [US], June 11 (ANI): An Indian national from Haryana has been detained at Newark Liberty International Airport in New Jersey for attempting to enter the United States without a valid visa, and is set to be deported once he receives medical clearance, according to sources.
The Indian Consulate in New York confirmed that the individual was apprehended upon arrival for entering the country illegally. While awaiting deportation, the individual’s behavior during transit was reportedly deemed unsuitable for travel, prompting authorities to restrain him and transfer him to a medical facility for evaluation and care.
Sources indicate that a U.S. court has already issued a deportation order, and the individual will be sent back to India as soon as he is medically fit to travel. The Indian Consulate stated it remains in close communication with U.S. authorities and is monitoring the situation.
The incident gained widespread attention after a video circulated on social media showing a man being restrained on the ground by two individuals, believed to be law enforcement or airport security personnel. The footage triggered a wave of concern online, prompting the Indian government to step in.
In response, the Indian Ministry of External Affairs has formally raised the matter with the U.S. Embassy in New Delhi. Additionally, India’s Embassy in Washington, D.C. and the Indian Consulate in New York have both been in touch with American officials to verify the circumstances surrounding the incident.
A government source noted on Tuesday, “Following the viral social media post, the Ministry has formally raised the matter with the U.S. Embassy in New Delhi. Our Embassy in Washington and the Consulate in New York are actively engaging with U.S. authorities to ascertain full details.”
The Indian Consulate General in New York also addressed the situation via an official statement on X (formerly Twitter), saying, “We have come across social media posts claiming that an Indian national is facing difficulties at Newark Liberty International Airport. We are in touch with local authorities in this regard. The Consulate remains ever committed to the welfare of Indian Nationals.”
Further updates are expected once the individual’s medical condition stabilizes and repatriation arrangements are finalized. (ANI)
