New Delhi [India], April 2 (ANI): The Indian Navy successfully intercepted and seized over 2,500 kg of narcotics in the Western Indian Ocean, in a major operation conducted by INS Tarkash, a frontline frigate of the Western Naval Command. The operation highlights the Navy’s commitment to combating maritime crime and strengthening regional security, according to a press release from the Government of India Defence Wing.
INS Tarkash’s Role in Maritime Security Operations
Deployed in the Western Indian Ocean since January 2025, INS Tarkash has been supporting Combined Task Force (CTF) 150, which is part of the Combined Maritime Forces (CMF) based in Bahrain. The ship is participating in the multi-national forces’ joint focus operation, Anzac Tiger.
Operation and Interception
On March 31, while on patrol, INS Tarkash received intelligence from Indian Navy P8I aircraft regarding suspicious vessels suspected of engaging in illicit activities, including narcotics trafficking. In response, the ship changed its course to intercept the suspected vessels.
- INS Tarkash systematically interrogated multiple suspicious vessels in the area.
- The ship, in coordination with the P8I aircraft and the Maritime Operations Centre in Mumbai, identified and intercepted a suspect Dhow.
- An integral helicopter was launched to monitor the suspicious vessel and detect other potential threats in the area.
Boarding and Seizure
A specialist boarding team, along with Marine Commandos, conducted a thorough search of the suspect Dhow. The search led to the discovery of various sealed packets, which were later confirmed to contain over 2,500 kg of narcotic substances:
- 2,386 kg of hashish
- 121 kg of heroin
The suspect vessel was taken under INS Tarkash’s control, and its crew was subjected to comprehensive questioning regarding their modus operandi and potential links to other smuggling operations in the area.
Significance of the Seizure
This major drug bust underscores the effectiveness and professionalism of the Indian Navy in deterring and disrupting illicit maritime activities. The Indian Navy’s participation in multinational exercises aims to enhance security, stability, and prosperity across the Indian Ocean Region (IOR).
