New Delhi [India], May 7 (ANI): India’s total wireless subscriber base, including mobile and 5G fixed wireless access (FWA), rose to 1,163.76 million in March 2025 from 1,160.33 million in February, marking a monthly growth of 0.28 per cent, according to data released by the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) on Wednesday.
The TRAI data shows that while the total wireless subscription in urban areas decreased from 634 million in February to 632.57 million in March, rural areas saw an increase from 526.33 million to 531.18 million during the same period. This translated into a monthly growth rate of -0.26 per cent for urban and 0.92 per cent for rural wireless subscriptions.
India’s overall Wireless Tele-density increased slightly from 82.23 per cent in February to 82.42 per cent in March. However, urban tele-density dropped from 125.30 per cent to 124.83 per cent, while rural tele-density improved from 58.16 per cent to 58.67 per cent.
At the end of March, the urban and rural share of wireless subscribers stood at 54.36 per cent and 45.64 per cent respectively.
Focusing on mobile subscriptions alone, the total wireless (mobile) subscriber base rose from 1,154.05 million in February to 1,156.99 million in March, a monthly increase of 0.25 per cent. Urban mobile subscriptions increased modestly from 627.94 million to 628.31 million, while rural mobile subscriptions went up from 526.11 million to 528.68 million, growing at 0.06 per cent and 0.49 per cent respectively.
Region-wise, Delhi continued to lead with the highest tele-density at 275.79 per cent, while Bihar recorded the lowest at 57.23 per cent.
In terms of contribution to net subscriber additions, Reliance Jio led the market with a 40.60 per cent share, followed by Bharti Airtel at 33.69 per cent, Vodafone Idea at 17.75 per cent, and BSNL at 7.87 per cent.
Reliance Jio Adds 2.17 Million Mobile Users in March, Continues Market Leadership
New Delhi [India], May 7 (ANI): Telecom giant Reliance Jio added about 2.17 million new mobile subscribers in March 2025, out of a total industry addition of 2.93 million, claiming over 74 per cent market share in new additions.
Jio’s continued dominance is reflected across multiple metrics, with over 70 per cent market share across categories. The company’s additions were nearly double that of Airtel across segments including wireless, wireline, VLR (Visitor Location Register), and 5G AirFiber.
In the VLR category alone, Jio added 5.03 million subscribers, commanding over 86 per cent of the total VLR subscriber additions.
Jio also remains a leader in 5G Fixed Wireless Access (FWA), the fastest-growing connectivity segment globally, with 5.57 million subscribers and over 82 per cent market share as of March 2025.
According to a report by Ookla, Jio was the fastest mobile service provider in India during the second half of 2024, both across all technologies combined and specifically in the 5G category.
