New Delhi, April 21 (ANI) — With the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) mayoral elections around the corner, BJP’s mayoral candidate Sardar Raja Iqbal Singh expressed strong optimism, claiming a wave of public support for the party and declaring that the “Lotus will bloom in the entire civic centre.”
Speaking to ANI, Iqbal Singh stated, “This is the win of Delhi’s public that was fed up with the AAP government. Now, a triple-engine government will be formed and Delhi development will begin.”
He took a direct swipe at the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), asserting that the people had already “thrown them off” after five years of governance. “We don’t need his (Saurabh Bharadwaj’s) advice. The public gave them a chance, and they failed to deliver.”
Outlining the BJP’s civic priorities, Singh emphasized that the foremost issue is cleanliness in Delhi. “Delhi should be clean and green. We will work on educational facilities, primary health centres, and try to maintain hygiene in all settlements,” he said.
Earlier in the day, AAP Delhi convenor and minister Saurabh Bharadwaj announced that the party would not field a candidate for the upcoming mayoral election, effectively abstaining from the contest. “Let BJP rule Delhi without any excuses,” Bharadwaj remarked, signaling a strategic withdrawal.
The MCD elections for Mayor and Deputy Mayor are scheduled for April 25, with nominations currently open. The BJP has formally nominated Sardar Raja Iqbal Singh as their candidate.
Currently, AAP controls the mayoral post, with Mayor Mahesh Kumar Khinchi narrowly winning in November 2024 by a margin of just three votes. The political dynamics, however, have shifted with this latest development.
The MCD was restructured in May 2022, merging the East, North, and South Delhi civic bodies into a single unified Municipal Corporation of Delhi. This upcoming election will be a crucial indicator of urban governance sentiment in the capital ahead of national elections.
