Tehran [Iran], June 14 (ANI): Iran’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Seyed Abbas Araghchi, held a telephonic conversation with India’s External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar on Friday, expressing gratitude for India’s solidarity and condemnation of the recent Israeli military actions in Iran.
According to a statement from Iran’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Jaishankar conveyed deep sympathies on behalf of the Indian government and people for the Iranian lives lost in the attacks. He also reiterated India’s position in favor of diplomacy and de-escalation amid the rising tensions in the region.
“On Friday evening, Indian Minister of External Affairs Subrahmanyam Jaishankar held a telephone conversation with Iranian Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi. During the conversation, Jaishankar extended deep sympathies of the government and people of India to the government and people of Iran following the Israeli regime’s attacks, which led to the loss of innocent lives,” the Iranian statement noted.
Jaishankar referenced his recent discussion with French Foreign Minister Stéphane Séjourné and underlined the necessity of enhancing international coordination to defuse the crisis. He emphasized the urgent need for all parties to avoid further escalatory steps and return to the diplomatic table.
In response, Araghchi expressed appreciation for India’s stand and said, “We were in the middle of a diplomatic process and engaged in consultations with our Omani counterpart to prepare for a new round of talks with representatives of the US government. But the Israeli regime’s acts of aggression — including attacking Iran, assassinating military commanders, and killing civilians and academic elites — derailed the diplomatic path.”
Earlier in the day, the Indian Embassy in Iran echoed these sentiments via a post on X, highlighting India’s call for restraint. “External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar had a phone conversation with FM Seyed Abbas Araghchi this evening. EAM conveyed the deep concern of the international community at the turn of events. He urged avoidance of any escalatory steps and an early return to diplomacy,” the post read.
Jaishankar also confirmed the conversation through his personal X account, stating, “Spoke to Iranian FM Seyed Abbas Araghchi this evening on the latest situation.”
The diplomatic exchange followed the launch of Israel’s large-scale military operation, Operation Rising Lion, which Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced on Friday. Describing it as a “targeted military operation,” Netanyahu claimed the campaign aims to eliminate threats from Iran’s nuclear and ballistic missile capabilities.
“In recent years, Iran has produced enough highly enriched uranium for nine atom bombs,” Netanyahu warned, stating that Tehran had begun taking steps to weaponize this material. He asserted that the operation would continue “for as many days as it takes to remove this threat.”
The developments have further deepened geopolitical tensions in the Middle East, with growing international calls for restraint and diplomatic re-engagement. (ANI)
