Sriharikota (Andhra Pradesh) [India], May 18 (ANI): The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) achieved a significant milestone on Sunday by launching its 101st satellite, EOS-09, aboard the Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLV-C61).
ISRO announced the successful launch via its social media platform, stating:
“LIFTOFF! ISRO’s 101st launch mission takes flight aboard PSLV-C61.”
The EOS-09, an Earth Observation Satellite, was deployed into a Sun Synchronous Polar Orbit (SSPO). Following the deployment, Orbit Change Thrusters (OCT) were used to lower the altitude of the PS4 stage, after which passivation was conducted to reduce the stage’s orbital life, ensuring responsible space operations.
EOS-09 is designed to provide continuous and reliable remote sensing data for use in various operational sectors. The satellite features C-band synthetic aperture radar technology, enabling it to capture high-resolution images of the Earth’s surface under all weather conditions, day or night. This capability enhances India’s surveillance and management systems across sectors like agriculture, forestry, disaster management, and military applications.
The mission, aligned with promoting sustainability, also includes the deployment of deorbiting fuel to safely dispose of the satellite post-mission. This is the 63rd flight of the PSLV rocket and the 27th using the PSLV-XL variant, marking another success for the PSLV’s reliable performance.
W Selvamurthy, a prominent scientist, congratulated ISRO scientists, technicians, and associated industries for the successful launch. Highlighting the satellite’s importance, he emphasized its role in forming part of a constellation aimed at monitoring agriculture, forestry, disaster management, and strategic applications, including military surveillance.
Many families and children gathered at the Satish Dhawan Space Centre in Sriharikota to witness the historic launch but were disappointed to learn that spectators were not allowed due to security concerns related to India-Pakistan tensions. Despite the setback, the visitors expressed pride and excitement over ISRO’s achievement.
One young visitor from Ranipet expressed his enthusiasm, stating:
“Even if I don’t get a chance to see the launch, I feel very excited to be here.”
Another student, who aspires to become the ISRO chairman, shared his disappointment at missing the live event but promised to return for future launches. He expressed his passion for space science, saying:
“I will surely come again next time. My aim is to become the ISRO chairman.”
The launch of EOS-09 marks a pivotal moment in ISRO’s journey, reflecting its commitment to innovative satellite technology and responsible space operations. (ANI)
