Basti (Uttar Pradesh), April 14 (ANI): BJP Member of Parliament Jagdambika Pal on Monday strongly condemned the recent violence in Murshidabad, West Bengal, calling it “unfortunate” and accusing the state government of sponsoring violence against Hindus. Pal, also the Chairman of the Waqf Amendment Bill Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC), alleged that Hindus in the region were being forced to flee their homes due to targeted violence orchestrated by the state.
Pal described a horrific attack on a Hindu household, where a father and son were killed by a mob, and 16 police personnel were injured during the unrest. He accused the state government of inaction, claiming that the violence was state-sponsored and blamed the authorities for allegedly protecting Bangladeshis and Rohingyas, who he suggested were seen as potential vote banks by the ruling government.
“This is a state-sponsored violence. The mob entered a Hindu house and killed a father and a son. Sixteen police personnel are injured, and yet the state government is taking no steps to stop it,” Pal stated. “They are providing protection to Bangladeshis and Rohingyas because they see them as their vote bank,” he added in his comments to ANI.
Earlier in the day, Suvendu Adhikari, Leader of Opposition in West Bengal and BJP leader, echoed similar concerns. He demanded that elections in areas where Hindus are in the minority be conducted under President’s Rule and called for a National Investigation Agency (NIA) probe into the violence, which he labelled as “anti-national activities.”
Adhikari further claimed that Hindus in Murshidabad were being denied voting rights in the aftermath of the violence. He argued, “After such explosions and firing incidents, the NIA should investigate Murshidabad as these are anti-national activities… Wherever Hindus are in the minority, they don’t let Hindus vote, and hence, elections must be held under President’s Rule for the sake of democracy.”
The BJP has accused the TMC government of inaction and appeasement, while the TMC has countered these claims by accusing the BJP of trying to stoke communal tensions.
The violence, which erupted during protests against the Waqf Amendment Act, led to three deaths and widespread unrest in the region. In response to the violence, the Calcutta High Court ordered the immediate deployment of central forces in Murshidabad to restore peace.
