Akhnoor (Jammu and Kashmir) [India], May 5 (ANI): Authorities in the Akhnoor region of Jammu and Kashmir issued an urgent evacuation advisory on Monday evening following expectations of a significant rise in the Chenab River’s water level. The warning came just hours after notable fluctuations were observed in the river’s flow.
“…The Chenab River’s water level is expected to increase soon. All of you are requested to come out of the river area immediately,” local police and administration officials announced, urging residents to evacuate low-lying zones near the river.
Earlier in the day, the Chenab River experienced a marked decline in water volume after the closure of floodgates at the Baglihar and Salal Dams. The temporary reduction in water flow prompted both concern and political commentary from residents in the area.
Local inhabitants attributed the lower water levels to the Indian government’s recent suspension of the Indus Waters Treaty with Pakistan, a move they openly endorsed. Many expressed strong nationalistic sentiments and support for Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s administration.
One resident, Kalyan Singh, remarked, “Earlier, the Chenab River used to flow at a height of 25 to 30 feet, but now there is barely 1.5 to 2 feet of water. This is due to PM Modi’s decision to halt the Indus Waters Treaty. We do not want even a single drop of our water to be supplied to Pakistan. We stand firmly with the Indian Army and the Prime Minister.”
Another elderly local, visibly emotional, said, “In my 75 years, I have never seen the Chenab at such low levels. I am shocked by this drastic change. I thank PM Modi for this bold step. The river, once full, now holds just 1 to 1.5 feet of water. We fully support our armed forces and the government’s actions.”
These developments follow the deadly terror attack in Pahalgam, which claimed 26 lives, the majority of whom were tourists. In response, the Indian government has taken a series of assertive measures aimed at Pakistan, including suspending the 1960 Indus Waters Treaty and expelling Defence, Military, Naval, and Air Advisors from the Pakistani High Commission in New Delhi.
The Indian government has reiterated its firm stance against terrorism and assured that those responsible for the Pahalgam attack—both perpetrators and masterminds—will face severe consequences.
