Tokyo [Japan], December 8 (ANI): Japan issued a tsunami warning on Monday night after a series of strong earthquakes struck off the east coast of Aomori Prefecture, prompting authorities to urge residents in coastal areas to move to higher ground and remain there until further notice.
According to the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA), a magnitude 7.6 earthquake occurred at 23:15 local time, with the epicenter located off Aomori Prefecture at a depth of 50 km. The agency warned that tsunamis may occur and stressed that residents should not leave safe locations until officials formally lift the alert. “As of 23:23 on the 8th, a tsunami warning is currently in effect. Tsunamis will strike repeatedly. Do not leave a safe location until the warning is lifted,” the JMA said in a post on X. Waves of up to 3 meters in height were forecast, with smaller tsunamis of 40–50 centimeters already observed in parts of Aomori, Hokkaido, and Iwate.
The warning followed earlier reports from India’s National Centre for Seismology (NCS), which recorded two significant quakes in the North Pacific Ocean. The first, a magnitude 7.5 earthquake, occurred at 19:45 IST at coordinates 41.05°N, 142.37°E, at a depth of 60 km, followed by a magnitude 6.0 quake at 20:03 IST at 40.88°N, 142.88°E at the same depth.
Both earthquakes were registered near Japan’s northeastern coastline, a region known for its high seismic activity. Authorities continue to monitor the situation closely and advise residents to follow safety instructions.
