Kolkata, April 8 (ANI):
The Trinamool Congress (TMC) is grappling with internal discord after an alleged public spat between MPs Kalyan Banerjee and Mahua Moitra came to light, followed by leaked WhatsApp chats and public statements, triggering embarrassment for the party.
Senior party leader Saugata Roy expressed regret over the incident, calling Kalyan Banerjee’s language “unfortunate” and criticized the internal messages being leaked.
“We are very sorry about this whole thing. The WhatsApp chats being leaked is unfortunate. The language used by Kalyan Banerjee is unfortunate. I hope the party leadership will take cognizance,” Roy said.
🔥 Allegations of Misconduct
According to Roy and reports from the scene:
- Kalyan Banerjee allegedly misbehaved with a fellow lady MP, widely reported to be Mahua Moitra.
- The confrontation reportedly occurred inside the Election Commission of India headquarters on April 4, where TMC MPs had gathered to submit a memorandum.
- Mahua Moitra was seen crying and complaining about Banerjee’s behavior to fellow MPs soon after the incident.
📱 WhatsApp Group Meltdown
BJP leader Amit Malviya posted details of the altercation, claiming the feud extended to a party WhatsApp group — ‘AITC MP 2024’ — where MPs from opposing camps clashed and traded barbs.
“The feud didn’t end there. It spilled over into the AITC WhatsApp group… And in the middle of it all, the question still lingers: who exactly is the ‘Versatile International Lady (VIL)’?” Malviya added.
🧾 Sequence of Events, According to Malviya
- An MP carrying the party memorandum reportedly skipped a scheduled meeting at Parliament and went directly to the EC office.
- Another MP confronted him at the Commission’s premises, leading to a heated exchange, prompting police personnel to intervene.
🗣️ TMC MPs Rally Against Banerjee
Roy mentioned that several MPs were angered by the incident:
“A number of our party MPs gathered and discussed that Kalyan’s behavior will not be tolerated anymore… everyone will reach out to our supremo Mamata Banerjee,” he said.
🎯 Targeting Kirti Azad
Roy confirmed that Kalyan Banerjee’s anger was also directed at Kirti Azad, likely for supporting Mahua Moitra.
“This is third class comment,” Roy said regarding Kalyan Banerjee’s remarks.
“Kirti Azad is a national-level cricketer… he won on his own steam. Who will join our party if such behavior continues?”
As the TMC leadership remains silent on disciplinary action, all eyes are now on Mamata Banerjee, who is expected to intervene to contain the damage and restore internal unity ahead of the crucial elections.
