Thiruvananthapuram, January 8: Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan on Thursday sharply criticized the United States for its recent military intervention in Venezuela, describing the capture of President Nicolas Maduro as an intrusion on national sovereignty and a reflection of “American imperialism.”
Speaking at a press briefing, Vijayan accused the US of engaging in “imperialist aggression” that disregards the territorial integrity of nations and results in widespread human suffering. He cited past interventions in Vietnam, Iraq, Syria, Libya, and Latin America as examples of Washington’s pursuit of economic and political interests at the cost of innocent lives.
“Disregarding the sovereignty of Venezuela, American imperialism has intruded into that country and has even taken the head of that nation into custody,” Vijayan said. He urged global democratic voices to oppose such actions, warning that similar intrusions could threaten any country in the world.
Vijayan’s remarks followed the US military operation in Caracas last Saturday, which led to the capture of Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores. Both were indicted in the Southern District of New York on charges of alleged drug trafficking and narco-terrorism conspiracies. Following their capture, Vice President Delcy Rodriguez assumed the role of acting president.
The Kerala CM also criticized the Indian central government for what he described as a muted response, accusing it of “trivializing” the situation and demonstrating “subservience to the United States.” He noted that official statements by the Ministry of External Affairs did not even mention the US by name. Vijayan further critiqued opposition parties and media outlets for failing to adequately challenge the US actions, asserting that much coverage “sugar-coated the American invasion” instead of highlighting it as a violation of sovereignty and human rights.
“The history of military intrusions carried out by American imperialism across the world is one of human bloodshed. To protect their economic and political interests, America has slaughtered hundreds of thousands of innocent people,” Vijayan said, emphasizing the need for global solidarity with the Venezuelan people, similar to the support India received after the Pahalgam terror attack in 2025.
