Durg (Chhattisgarh) [India], July 29 (ANI): A five-member delegation led by Kerala Congress MP Francis George visited Durg Central Jail on Tuesday to meet two Kerala-based Catholic nuns currently incarcerated on charges of alleged human trafficking and forcible religious conversion. The case has sparked outrage and concern in Kerala, particularly among the Christian community.
Speaking to the media following the visit, MP Francis George voiced deep concern over the arrests. “The family members and the entire Christian community in Kerala are very anguished, and they want justice to be done. We have come to meet them and seek their protection from the state government. We will request the authorities to help resolve this case, and we are confident the court will grant them bail. We are very sure that these two are innocent,” George said.
He reaffirmed the delegation’s belief in the nuns’ innocence while emphasizing their opposition to any unlawful acts. “We are very sure that these two are innocent. If they have done anything wrong, we will not support them. We do not believe in forcible conversion, human trafficking, or any kind of legal violation. But this case has been fabricated and alleged without any truth,” he added.
Kerala Education Minister R. Bindu also weighed in, calling the arrests a reflection of “fascist measures” by the RSS and BJP. “The Sangh Parivar exerts its force on Christian and Muslim minorities in North India. During elections, they visit churches with cakes—such acts are merely superficial,” she said.
On July 27, the Catholic Bishops Conference of India (CBCI) issued a strong condemnation of the incident. According to their statement, the women had explicit written permission from their parents to accompany them but were still arrested and allegedly assaulted. The CBCI stated, “Such incidents not only threaten the modesty of women but also put their lives in grave danger. These repeated, unwarranted actions are a serious violation of the Constitution and cannot be tolerated.” (ANI)
