CHENNAI, India, February 12 (ANI): The Madras High Court has directed cricketer Mahendra Singh Dhoni to deposit ₹10 lakh by March 12 toward expenses for transcribing a CD related to his defamation case against retired IPS officer Sampath Kumar.
Dhoni had filed a ₹100-crore defamation suit against Kumar, alleging that remarks made during a 2013 television debate damaged his reputation. During the debate on the IPL cricket betting scandal, Kumar had allegedly linked Dhoni, then a Chennai team player, to the controversy.
In 2014, the High Court ordered that the CD connected to the case be transcribed into written form, subject to payment of the necessary charges.
While hearing the matter, Justice R.N. Manjula observed that both a translator and a typist would need to dedicate their full time to transcribing the CD, a process expected to take approximately three to four months. The court also noted that additional costs would be incurred for copying the translated documents.
Accordingly, the judge directed Dhoni to deposit ₹10 lakh toward translation expenses in the Chief Justice’s Relief Fund by March 12. The translator and typist have been instructed to complete the transcription by the third week of March. The case has been adjourned to March 12.
Earlier, Dhoni filed the defamation suit seeking ₹100 crore in damages for allegedly being linked to the 2013 IPL betting scandal. (ANI)
