Beijing [China], April 10 (ANI): Amid the ongoing tariff war between China and the United States, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning declared that China “is not afraid of provocations, and it won’t back down.”
Mao Ning shared a video on X of former Chinese leader Mao Zedong from 1953, during China’s conflict with the U.S. While posting the video, she stated, “We are Chinese. We are not afraid of provocations. We don’t back down.”
In the video, Zedong says, “As to how long this war will last, we are not the ones who can decide. It used to depend on President Truman, and it will depend on President Eisenhower, or whoever becomes the next U.S. president. It’s up to them.” He adds, “No matter how long this war is going to last, we will never yield. We’ll fight until we completely triumph.”
On Wednesday (local time), U.S. President Donald Trump announced an immediate increase in tariffs on China to 125 percent. The decision followed China’s retaliatory move to raise tariffs on U.S. goods from 34 percent to 84 percent, effective April 10, as reported by Al Jazeera. China’s move came after the U.S. had earlier increased tariffs on Chinese imports to 104 percent.
Earlier, on Sunday, Trump had threatened an additional 50 percent hike in tariffs on China following Beijing’s retaliatory increase. That hike came in response to Trump’s announcement of reciprocal tariffs during Liberation Day on April 2.
China has criticized the U.S. tariffs as “groundless” and labeled them a form of unilateral bullying, according to a spokesperson from China’s Ministry of Commerce. (ANI)
