Ottawa, Canada, May 2 (ANI): Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney is scheduled to meet U.S. President Donald Trump at the White House on May 6, marking the first official engagement between the two leaders since Carney’s Liberal Party secured an electoral victory.
During his first press conference following the election, Carney described a recent phone conversation with President Trump as “constructive,” highlighting their mutual decision to convene in person next Tuesday.
“Shortly after the start of the election campaign, I spoke with him. On Tuesday, I had a very constructive call with President Trump, and we agreed to meet next Tuesday,” Carney stated.
The Prime Minister emphasized that the discussion would center on both immediate economic pressures and the long-term outlook of the trade relationship between Canada and the United States.
“Our focus will be on immediate pressures and the broader future of the economic relationship between our two sovereign nations,” Carney explained. “My government will fight to secure the best possible deals for Canada. We will take the time necessary to do this. In parallel, we will also strengthen our ties with reliable trading partners.”
Carney also outlined key upcoming events in his new administration’s agenda. He confirmed that a new Cabinet would be sworn in during the week of May 12, Parliament would reconvene on May 26, and King Charles III would deliver the Speech from the Throne the following day.
“We will begin to set out that new path with a new Cabinet to be sworn in the week of May 12, and the recall of Parliament on May 26,” Carney said. “We will have the privilege of welcoming His Majesty King Charles III, who will deliver the Speech from the Throne on May 27. Her Majesty the Queen will accompany him on this visit.”
In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Carney reiterated his commitment to a strong national economy and principled leadership. “Canadians elected a new government to stand up for Canada and build a strong economy,” he wrote. “As Prime Minister, I’ve heard that message loud and clear. Today, I’ve shared my plan to set out on a new path for Canada—and act with focus and determination.”
The upcoming meeting comes amid escalating economic tensions. President Trump’s decision to impose a 25 percent tariff on Canadian exports—affecting steel, aluminum, automobiles, car parts, and potentially pharmaceuticals and lumber—has created substantial instability within Canada’s economy. These measures have alarmed business leaders and economists alike, with many warning of an impending recession.
Prime Minister Carney has not downplayed these challenges, cautioning Canadians that “tough days lie ahead,” particularly in terms of employment and economic security.
