Vatican City, May 18 (ANI): Deputy Chairperson of the Rajya Sabha, Harivansh, attended the inaugural mass of Pope Leo XIV at Saint Peter’s Square in Vatican City on Sunday. Harivansh extended best wishes on behalf of the people of India, as stated by the Office of the Deputy Chairman, Rajya Sabha.
Pope Leo XIV, the first ever American Pope, condemned the exploitation of the poor and called for unity in the church during his inaugural mass, which took place at St. Peter’s Square. The event was attended by world leaders, royalty, and thousands of believers, according to CNN.
The 267th pontiff arrived at the Vatican on the popemobile and was welcomed by cheers from the massive crowd as he toured St. Peter’s Square for the first time. Around 100,000 people gathered at the start of the mass, as reported by authorities. During his tour on the popemobile, Pope Leo stopped briefly to kiss a child, drawing further applause, CNN reported.
Chants of “Viva il Papa” echoed through the square, accompanied by shouts of joy and loud applause as the pontiff made his way to the altar. The two-hour-long liturgy was attended by notable figures, including US Vice-President JD Vance, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, who were seen shaking hands before the start of the service.
Pope Leo is scheduled to meet President Zelenskyy later on Sunday. Also present was Peruvian President Dina Boluarte, representing the country where Pope Leo had previously served as both a missionary and a bishop for several decades. The event saw the presence of delegates from over 150 nations, demonstrating global representation, as per CNN.
During his homily, Pope Leo addressed the congregation, emphasizing that there is no place in the Catholic Church for “religious propaganda” or power plays, advocating instead for unity. This statement was seen as a reference to the divisions between reformists and conservatives that intensified under Pope Francis.
Pope Leo also condemned the current economic system, criticizing it for exploiting the Earth’s resources and marginalizing the poorest. (ANI)
