Bhubaneswar (Odisha) [India], December 12 (ANI): A fire broke out at a hotel bar in the Satya Vihar area of Bhubaneswar, Odisha, on Friday morning. The fire, reported around 9 a.m., prompted the fire department to dispatch seven fire tenders after an initial team reported the blaze.
Deputy Fire Officer Narayana Dash explained, “…a total of four teams were sent to douse the blaze, amounting to almost 30 personnel. The open bar shed has been damaged, and the adjacent room is partially damaged. There are no casualties as it was early morning and nothing had started at the time. A short circuit might be the reason for the fire…”
When asked about fire safety measures at the hotel, the DFO noted that there may have been only a single fire extinguisher and the establishment might not have held a valid fire safety certificate. The case will be investigated according to Fire Department regulations. Assistant Fire Officer Manoranjan Rout added that the fire occurred in the terrace area where the bar was located, and thick smoke had filled the staircase by the time firefighters arrived, necessitating the deployment of four teams to control the blaze.
The incident comes in the wake of a deadly fire in Goa, where 25 people lost their lives at a restaurant-bar, raising concerns about safety measures in such establishments. Both fire officials stated that authorities have been directed to inspect commercial spaces to ensure compliance with fire safety regulations. “If a place does not meet proper fire safety standards, we will first insist that it complies with all necessary rules and procedures, and in case of non-adherence, we will proceed according to departmental regulations,” the DFO added.
The Assistant Fire Officer noted that hotels, bars, and restaurants will receive notices along with a checklist to ensure adherence to fire safety norms.
