Gwalior (Madhya Pradesh) [India], June 16 (ANI): A 25-year-old man died after setting himself on fire, allegedly distressed by a long-term relationship with his lover, police officials said on Monday. The incident occurred in the Sikandar Kampoo area of Gwalior district.
The deceased, identified as Ajay Kushwaha, had reportedly been in a relationship with a woman for the past nine years. Police said he was emotionally and financially troubled due to ongoing issues with the woman, which ultimately led him to take the extreme step on the night of June 13. He doused himself in a flammable substance and set himself ablaze outside the woman’s residence.
He was rushed to a hospital in critical condition. Upon receiving information about the incident, the local police along with a tehsildar recorded his dying statement at the hospital. He succumbed to his burn injuries on June 15.
According to City Superintendent of Police (CSP) Manish Yadav, “The incident occurred in the jurisdiction of Madhavganj police station. In his statement, Ajay claimed he was blackmailed multiple times by the woman, who extorted approximately ₹3 lakh from him. He also expressed that he wanted to marry her, but she refused.”
Ajay’s family members later submitted a formal complaint, prompting the police to register a case under relevant sections against the woman, her father, and her brother. “Based on the victim’s statement and the complaint filed by his family, an FIR was lodged on June 15. The woman and her family members have been booked and are currently absconding,” CSP Yadav stated.
The officer further revealed that Ajay and the woman had lived together in a rented accommodation during the course of their relationship. Ajay reportedly provided for her financially and claimed to have married her in a temple ceremony. However, issues surfaced over money and allegations of her involvement with someone else, which may have contributed to his mental distress.
“The victim alleged that she found his financial support insufficient and was persistently demanding more money. He also suspected her of being in a relationship with another individual,” the CSP added.
A manhunt is underway to apprehend the accused. Police have assured that appropriate action will be taken based on the findings of the ongoing investigation. (ANI)
