Indore (Madhya Pradesh) [India], July 24 (ANI): A rare and complex medical case has emerged at Government Maharaja Tukojirao Holkar Hospital (MTH Hospital) in Indore, Madhya Pradesh, where a woman gave birth to a baby girl with two heads. The newborn is currently in critical condition, according to hospital officials.
The cesarean delivery took place on the night of July 22, as a normal delivery was deemed impossible. The baby weighs 2.8 kilograms and is being treated in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU).
Dr. Nilesh Jain, Professor of Pediatrics at MGM Medical College, told ANI, “The newborn has two heads and a single body, a condition known as conjoined twins. The infant is very critical and experiencing breathing difficulties. There are two hearts—one is rudimentary while the other is functional but structurally abnormal. In such cases, the chances of survival are very low, and saving the baby is extremely difficult.”
He further noted that pediatric surgeons have stated it is not possible to surgically separate the baby due to the placement of internal organs. “Treatment is ongoing, and all necessary facilities have been arranged. However, survival depends entirely on the internal organ functions. If the organs do not function properly, the survival chances decrease significantly,” Dr. Jain added.
The parents are reportedly in shock, and efforts are underway to offer them emotional and psychological support. Speaking about potential surgical intervention, Dr. Jain said, “At this point, the parents are not in a condition to make decisions. We will present all options to them at a later stage. Cases of conjoined twins occur once or twice a year here. We have successfully operated on similar cases in the past, but this particular case is inoperable due to the organ placement.”
Dr. Nilesh Dalal, Head of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, stated that the mother, a resident of Dewas district, was admitted to MTH Hospital in emergency condition after experiencing labor pains. “A baby girl was delivered via cesarean section. It’s a rare case of conjoined twins with two heads joined. We plan to perform an MRI and proceed with treatment accordingly, though the prognosis is poor. The mother is in stable condition, while the child remains under intensive care in the NICU,” he said.
