Mumbai (Maharashtra), May 13: In a bid to tighten security, the Mumbai Police have enforced a temporary ban on the use of drones and other remote-controlled flying devices from May 5 to June 3. The restriction includes drones, microlight aircraft, paragliders, paramotors, hand gliders, hot air balloons, and similar aerial devices.
This measure comes in light of ongoing national security concerns, following heightened tensions between India and Pakistan. The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has declared Mumbai a red zone for drone operations, and any unauthorised drone flights are considered serious violations.
Despite the directive, a 23-year-old individual was caught operating a drone in the Powai area of Mumbai on Sunday. He was subsequently booked under relevant sections of the law. DCP (Operations) Akbar Pathan confirmed the incident and urged public cooperation to ensure the success of the security measures.
The ban aims to ensure public safety following the April 22 terror attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, which resulted in the deaths of 26 civilians. In retaliation, the Indian Armed Forces initiated Operation Sindoor on May 7, targeting terror sites in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Jammu and Kashmir (PoK).
Pakistan responded by launching large-scale aerial attacks using drones and unmanned systems. However, India’s air defence systems successfully neutralised the Pakistani aerial threats, with Air Marshal AK Bharti confirming no damage occurred from these incursions.
