Kolkata (West Bengal) [India], July 12 (ANI): The mother of Mahaveer Toppannavar alias Parmanand Jain, the student arrested in connection with an alleged rape on the Indian Institute of Management (IIM) Calcutta campus, expressed shock and disbelief at her son’s detention, insisting he could never commit such an act.
Speaking to ANI, she said the family was informed late on Friday night by one of her son’s friends but was still in the dark about the details of the case.
“We received a call from his friend around 11 in the night. He told us that my son has been detained and he doesn’t know the reason. We have no clue why our son has been arrested. We want to meet our son and talk to him,” she said.
Clearly distraught, she added, “He was in the final year of his college. We do not know anything here in Kolkata — where the police station is or the court. My son is innocent. He has come so far to study. He will never do such a dirty thing.”
Earlier, Kolkata Police confirmed that a woman had accused a student of IIM Calcutta of raping her on the institute’s campus and lodged a complaint at Haridevpur Police Station on Friday evening.
“Late last evening, a woman reported at Haridevpur Police Station that a student inside the IIM Calcutta campus raped her. Based on her complaint, a case has been registered, and the accused has been arrested,” police officials stated.
The accused, identified as Mahaveer Toppannavar, was taken into custody late Friday night. Police said an investigation into the incident is underway.
The woman’s identity and further details of the case remain undisclosed as authorities continue their probe.
More information is awaited as the investigation progresses.
