Kathmandu [Nepal], September 14 (ANI): The death toll in the Gen Z protests in Nepal rose to 72 on Sunday, a police official told ANI. Among the dead were 59 protesters, three police officers, and 10 inmates who were attempting to flee.
After taking charge as Nepal’s interim Prime Minister, Sushila Karki announced that those killed during the anti-corruption protest would be recognized as “Martyrs,” and a compensation amount of one million Nepali rupees would be given to their families. She made the announcement in her remarks after assuming office.
During a press conference, Karki stated that all those who died on September 8 would be honored as “Martyrs” and would receive one million Nepali rupees each. She added that the government would bear the expenses of the injured and provide them with compensation. The government will also facilitate the transfer of bodies from Kathmandu to other districts.
Karki further emphasized that those involved in acts of vandalism would be investigated, and the government would discuss and work on reconstruction measures. “Personal properties were also burned down. We will not leave them, and the government will work on measures to give them some compensation. It can be through soft loans or any other measures,” she said.
The interim Prime Minister underscored that the government is not in power to “taste authority” and will not stay for more than six months. Speaking about the protest, she noted that the movement was the first of its kind in Nepal, driven by demands for economic equality and the eradication of corruption.
Former Chief Justice Sushila Karki assumed office as the interim Prime Minister of Nepal on Sunday, becoming the first woman to hold the position in the Himalayan country. The 73-year-old former Chief Justice was sworn in as interim Prime Minister on Friday after widespread Gen Z protests erupted over political stagnation, corruption, and economic disparity, triggered by the government’s ban on social media platforms.
