Guwahati, April 8 (ANI):
The Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) has taken significant strides toward enhancing railway safety, connectivity, and operational efficiency across Assam, Bihar, and West Bengal. Between April 2024 and March 2025, NFR successfully constructed 11 Road Over Bridges (ROBs), 26 Road Under Bridges (RUBs), and eliminated 28 manned level crossings (MLCs).
According to Kapinjal Kishore Sharma, Chief Public Relations Officer of NFR, the elimination of MLCs was achieved through a strategic mix of ROBs, RUBs, Low Height Subways (LHS), closures, and diversions, resulting in reduced delays, improved safety, and smoother transportation.
“These infrastructure upgrades have significantly improved connectivity and ensured congestion-free movement for both road and rail traffic, demonstrating NFR’s commitment to modern and reliable transport solutions,” Sharma said.
Highlights of the Infrastructure Upgrade:
- 28 MLCs eliminated across high-risk and strategic zones
- Major ROBs constructed in Dibrugarh, Kamrup Metro, Jorhat, and Lakhimpur
- RUBs and LHSs built in Alipurduar and Kokrajhar based on traffic and regional needs
- Projects executed in collaboration with NHAI, Railways’ Construction Wings, Deposit Agencies, and State Governments
High-traffic crossings like FM-57 in Jorhat and RM-257 in Lakhimpur were equipped with well-structured ROBs, while less busy areas were managed with direct closures to optimize resources.
Broader Impact:
- Increased safety with the removal of accident-prone level crossings
- Faster and uninterrupted train movement, reducing delays for passengers and freight
- Lower road congestion, benefiting regional commuters
- Fuel savings and emission reduction, supporting India’s sustainability goals
- Enhanced economic opportunities in remote and border districts due to improved accessibility
These developments mark a major leap in Northeast India’s transportation landscape, aligning with national goals of infrastructure modernization, safety, and eco-friendly growth.
