New Delhi [India], January 20 (ANI): BJP leader Nitin Nabin on Tuesday formally took charge as the National President of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), marking a significant leadership transition in the world’s largest political party. The ceremony at the BJP headquarters was attended by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, outgoing BJP President JP Nadda, senior party leaders, and Chief Ministers from BJP-ruled states.
The BJP’s National President election process began after 30 of the party’s 36 State Presidents were elected, surpassing the mandatory 50 per cent threshold. The election schedule was announced on January 16, 2026, along with the Electoral Roll.
As per the schedule, nominations were filed on January 19 between 2 PM and 4 PM, during which 37 sets of nomination papers were submitted in support of Nitin Nabin. His candidature was proposed by top leaders including Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Amit Shah, and Rajnath Singh. BJP leader K Laxman later confirmed that Nabin had been formally proposed for the post after receiving unanimous support.
Nitin Nabin, a senior Indian politician, is a five-time Member of the Bihar Legislative Assembly. Born on May 23, 1980, in Ranchi, Jharkhand, he entered electoral politics at a young age and was first elected to the Bihar Assembly in 2006 from the Patna West constituency.
Since 2010, he has represented the Bankipur Assembly Constituency, winning consecutive elections in 2010, 2015, 2020, and 2025. He has served as a Cabinet Minister in the Bihar government, holding key portfolios including Road Construction, Urban Development & Housing, and Law. Alongside his legislative career, Nabin has held important organisational responsibilities at both state and national levels, including assignments in Sikkim and Chhattisgarh.

He recalled his first interaction with the Prime Minister during the Sadbhavana Mission in Gujarat, saying it taught him that true leadership comes from connecting with people’s emotions. Nabin also expressed confidence in the BJP’s prospects in the upcoming Assembly elections in Tamil Nadu, Assam, West Bengal, Kerala, and Puducherry, stating that the dedication and hard work of party workers would ensure success in all five states.
Criticising opposition parties, Nabin accused them of attempting to interfere with cultural and religious traditions, citing incidents such as objections to the Karthigai Deepam festival in Tamil Nadu. He asserted that forces opposing India’s cultural heritage should have no place in national politics.
Bihar BJP President Sanjay Saraogi on Tuesday described the appointment of Nitin Nabin as the party’s national president as a “matter of joy for the people of Bihar“. He said BJP workers across the state and the country are celebrating the occasion with great enthusiasm.
Speaking to ANI at the BJP headquarters in the national capital, Saraogi said, “Today is a big day for the countless workers of the BJP as we are getting a new national president… It is also a matter of joy for the people of Bihar… Gulal and firecrackers are being used to celebrate in Bihar today… The countless workers of Bihar and the BJP across the country are extremely excited.” BJP workers and supporters in Bankipur in Bihar celebrated as BJP national working president Nitin Nabin is set to assume charge later in the day.

Prime Minister, I express my heartfelt gratitude to you because we, as ordinary workers, have always observed from afar how you are continuously working for the service of the nation,” Nabin said.”I remember the first time I participated in a program with you in Anand, Gujarat.
I was the National General Secretary at the time, and I saw you listening to each and every person during the Sadbhavana Mission program. And after the program ended, when you spoke to us in your green room, you explained with such emotion why so many people from Gujarat had come… That day, I understood that a person becomes great when they connect themselves with the emotions of the people,” he said.
Nabin also expressed confidence in the party’s prospects in the upcoming assembly elections in Tamil Nadu, Assam, West Bengal, Kerala, and Puducherry. He said that the hard work and dedication of BJP workers will ensure success in all five states.”
In the next few months, elections are about to be held in Tamil Nadu, Assam, West Bengal, Kerala and Puducherry, and the demographics of these states are being widely discussed. The changing demographics are altering the situation there, and this presents a challenge for us. However, we are completely confident that the BJP workers, through their struggle and hard work, will lead the BJP to success in all five states,” he said

Recently we saw how opposition parties tried to stop the sacred Karthigai Deepam festival on a hill in Tamil Nadu. This isn’t the only instance; the opposition has conspired to stop other things as well. We recently saw how an attempt was made to impeach a judge.
Today, when we talk about Somnath and try to celebrate this festival of pride, the people in the opposition parties feel uneasy. We believe that it is necessary to confront the forces that try to stop such traditions. We must ensure that those who deny the existence of Ram Setu and oppose the Karthigai Deepam festival have no place in Indian politics,” Nabin further said.
