New Delhi [India], January 6 (ANI): Iran’s Ambassador to India, Mohammad Fathali, has assured that the situation in Iran is under control and that there is no threat to Indian citizens or interests in the country. His remarks came a day after India’s Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) issued a travel advisory urging caution amid ongoing protests in Iran.
“In view of recent developments, Indian nationals are advised to avoid non-essential travel to the Islamic Republic of Iran until further notice,” the MEA stated.
Speaking exclusively to ANI, Ambassador Fathali said public order is being maintained and that diplomatic, economic, and consular activities are functioning normally. “I would like to state with full confidence that there is no threat to Indian citizens, like those of other countries residing in Iran,” he said.
The unrest began in Tehran on December 28, fueled by public frustration over Iran’s prolonged economic crisis, and has escalated into more violent confrontations in recent days. The Ambassador emphasized that peaceful protest and expression of public demands are recognized legal rights within Iran’s democratic system. He noted that Iranian leaders, including the President, have stressed the importance of addressing citizens’ concerns through lawful and civil channels.
Fathali also criticized certain foreign media outlets and external actors for exaggerating events, alleging that misleading narratives are being circulated to inflame tensions and encourage unrest. “A significant portion of what is being reported in some media outlets does not correspond to the realities on the ground and is largely the result of exaggeration, media-driven narratives, and biased reporting,” he said.
Responding to statements by US leaders supporting protesters, the Ambassador described such remarks as interference in Iran’s internal affairs. “Turning a domestic issue into an instrument of political pressure and media warfare is unacceptable and contrary to international law,” he said.
The MEA advisory also outlined safety precautions for Indian nationals already in Iran, urging them to avoid areas of protests or demonstrations and to closely monitor updates from the Embassy of India in Tehran. Indian citizens residing in Iran on resident visas were advised to ensure they are registered with the Indian mission if they have not done so already.
