Bhubaneswar (Odisha) [India], December 1 (ANI): A first-year Computer Science student at Kalinga Institute of Industrial Technology (KIIT) University in Bhubaneswar was found dead in his hostel room late Sunday night, prompting a police investigation and the deployment of additional security around the campus.
The deceased has been identified as Rahul Yadav, 18, a resident of Raigad, Chhattisgarh, studying Computer Science Engineering at the private institute. According to the Bhubaneswar-Cuttack Police Commissionerate, authorities were informed around 10:45 PM on November 30 that the student was found hanging in his room at KP 7 AB, Campus 10. The room was locked from the inside, and police immediately reached the scene. A case of unnatural death has been registered.
Rahul was taken to KIMS Hospital, where he was declared dead. Investigating officers examined the scene and seized his mobile phone and laptop as part of the ongoing inquiry. Senior police officials, including the Commissioner of Police, visited the hostel and spoke with students to gather preliminary information. The room has been sealed pending further investigation.
Rahul’s family from Raigarh, Chhattisgarh, has been informed and is currently in Bhubaneswar. His cousin, Harish Kumar Yadav, told ANI, “We don’t know what happened. The post-mortem is ongoing. Then we will take the body back home.” Rahul’s maternal grandfather, Shanti Lal Yadav, added, “We learned about this after 10:30 PM yesterday. We will take his body back to the village. His father is in Raigarh but paralysed. His mother is here; she is a teacher.”
Police confirmed that law and order around the hostel is under control, with a platoon force and officers deployed on the nights of November 30 and December 1. The investigation into the circumstances surrounding the student’s death is ongoing.
This is the second case within three months involving a student from a neighbouring country found dead at KIIT University. In May, a Nepalese student was found dead in her hostel room, and another Nepalese student had died at the same university in February.
