New Delhi [India], July 17 (ANI): The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) is actively supporting Nimisha Priya, an Indian nurse on death row in Yemen, describing the matter as “sensitive” and confirming ongoing efforts to assist her and her family.
In a weekly media briefing on Thursday, MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said the government has appointed a lawyer to help Priya’s family navigate the legal process in Yemen, including exploring options for clemency or pardon under Sharia law. Regular consular visits have also been arranged to ensure her well-being and provide support.
“This is a very sensitive matter and the government of India has been offering all possible assistance in the case. We have provided legal assistance and appointed a lawyer to assist the family. We have arranged for regular consular visits by her family and remain in touch with local authorities and the family to resolve this issue,” Jaiswal said.
He noted that India’s efforts in recent days led to a postponement of Priya’s execution, originally scheduled for July 16, giving her family more time to work toward a mutually agreeable solution with the other party.
“We continue to closely follow the matter and render all possible assistance. We are also in touch with some friendly governments in this regard,” he added.
When asked about the role of the Grand Mufti of India in urging for a postponement, Jaiswal said he had no specific information to share. Earlier this week, Grand Mufti Sheikh Abubakr Ahmad said he reached out to scholars in Yemen to request Priya’s release, citing the Islamic principle of diya (compensation) as an alternative to execution.
“I requested them to accept diyaat as the party is ready here for it. The date of execution was tomorrow, but it has now been postponed for some days,” the Grand Mufti told ANI, framing his appeal as a humanitarian gesture.
Sources told ANI the postponement came after the Government of India’s “concerted efforts,” opening a window for further dialogue.
Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan welcomed the delay, calling it “comforting and hopeful” as it provides additional time to work toward a reprieve. He acknowledged the intervention of Kanthapuram AP Abubacker Musliyar, the Action Council, and others who have been advocating on Priya’s behalf.
The MEA reaffirmed its commitment to supporting Priya and her family as they navigate this complex and sensitive situation. (ANI)
