
Yangon [Myanmar], April 13 (ANI): In the wake of the devastating 7.7-magnitude earthquake that struck Myanmar on March 28, India has ramped up its humanitarian outreach under Operation Brahma, with Indian Army Engineers deployed to assess infrastructure damage and assist in relief efforts.
Engineer Team on Ground
A specialist recce team from the Indian Army arrived in Myanmar on April 6 following a formal request from the Government of Myanmar. The team—led by a Commanding Officer and comprising one officer and five personnel—is conducting structural assessments in Mandalay and Naypyitaw to guide ongoing relief and reconstruction.
Support to Local Communities
India’s efforts extend beyond military assistance:
- Ambassador Abhay Thakur handed over 15 tonnes of rice, cooking oil, and food supplies to a Relief Group in Yangon.
- The Consulate General in Mandalay donated a generator set, water purifier, and cooking oil to the Ambika temple kitchen, which is currently feeding 4,000 people daily.
“Giving a helping hand to our diaspora,” stated the Embassy of India in Myanmar on X.
Field Medical Support & Aid Delivery
In Mandalay, India has set up a Field Hospital, where as of April 9, 1,651 patients had been treated, including 281 on a single day. Medical teams have performed:
- 7 major surgeries
- 38 minor procedures
India has also delivered 442 tonnes of food aid recently, bringing the total to 625 metric tonnes under Operation Brahma.
NDRF & Canine Units Join Rescue
India’s National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) has deployed:
- 80 personnel
- 4 canine units to assist in search-and-rescue operations in severely affected areas.
The Humanitarian Crisis
According to Myanmar’s State Administration Council:
- 3,645 people have died
- 5,017 are injured
- 148 are missing
The earthquake has devastated six regions, including the capital, with widespread destruction of infrastructure. This disaster worsens an already dire situation caused by ongoing civil conflict, with over 3 million displaced and nearly 20 million in need of assistance, per UN figures.
India’s Operation Brahma underscores its neighbourhood-first policy and continued commitment to humanitarian aid, even amid complex regional challenges.
