New Delhi [India], June 1 (ANI): Congress MP Jairam Ramesh on Sunday sharply criticized the government’s silence regarding recent statements made by former US President Donald Trump about India-Pakistan relations. He questioned Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s lack of response to Trump’s repeated claims of brokering a truce between the two countries.
Ramesh told ANI, “President Trump has repeated the same point for 21 days. He claims to have mediated and brokered the ceasefire. The new claim is about nuclear escalation. He has also reiterated threats related to trade and tariffs. Even Secretary of State Marco Rubio, VP Vance, and their Trade Secretary have echoed these points.”
The Congress leader accused the government of deflecting attention by targeting the Congress party instead of Pakistan. “Our Prime Minister is silent. He has not responded to President Trump’s statements. Instead, he is targeting the Congress party when he should focus on ensuring that the perpetrators of the Pahalgam terror attack are caught and brought to justice,” Ramesh added.
He further emphasized that the Congress party has supported the government throughout the crisis starting April 22. “The Congress has demanded unity and solidarity during this critical time and has extended its full support to the government,” he said.
Drawing historical parallels, Ramesh recalled the democratic traditions under Jawaharlal Nehru’s leadership, stating, “When the Chinese attack occurred in 1962, Vajpayee ji wanted Nehru ji to convene Parliament, and it was done. This democratic tradition means the Leader of Opposition calls for a Parliament session, and the Prime Minister listens and responds.”
Reiterating Congress’s demand, Ramesh called for an all-party meeting chaired by the Prime Minister and a special parliamentary session to discuss the crisis. “Recent revelations by Chief of Defence Staff General Anil Chauhan in Singapore make this demand even more relevant,” he said. “The Parliament session should result in a resolution reaffirming the February 22, 1994 resolution on PoK, with additional new elements.”
General Chauhan, speaking at the Shangri-La Dialogue in Singapore, acknowledged that the Indian Armed Forces had suffered losses in the initial stages of their operations but then struck Pakistan’s bases with significant success. He told Reuters, “On May 7 and the initial stages, there were losses, but the important question is why did these losses occur and what will we do after that? We rectified the tactics and on the 7th, 8th, and 10th, we struck their bases deep inside Pakistan with impunity.”
Earlier statements from Air Marshal Bharti, Director General Air Operations, had noted that aircraft losses were part of the combat scenario.
General Chauhan also dismissed Pakistan’s claims that India ceased aerial operations after May 7, stating that India’s response intensified, striking 11 Pakistani airbases on May 10, including Nur Khan airbase near Islamabad. Satellite images from Indian and international sources confirmed the precision and effectiveness of these strikes.
After India’s strikes on terror bases in Pakistan, Pakistan attempted to target defence and civilian installations in India, leading to further Indian precision strikes on multiple Pakistani air bases. Both countries agreed on a cessation of hostilities on May 10. (ANI)
