New Delhi, April 22 (ANI): In response to the terrorist attack targeting tourists in Pahalgam, South Kashmir, Prime Minister Narendra Modi held an urgent telephonic conversation with Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Tuesday. During the call, PM Modi instructed Shah to take all necessary measures to respond to the attack and ensure swift action against the perpetrators.
The Prime Minister has also directed the Home Minister to personally visit the site in Anantnag district to assess the situation and oversee the security arrangements on the ground.
“The Prime Minister has expressed deep concern over the incident and emphasized the need for a strong response to such acts of terror,” said a government official familiar with the matter.
Earlier in the day, several civilians were reportedly injured after terrorists opened fire in the Pahalgam area. While the exact number of casualties has not been officially confirmed, local hospitals have received injured tourists, and the area has been sealed off by security forces. A search operation is currently underway.
Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah described the attack as unprecedented in recent years:
“This attack is much larger than anything we’ve seen directed at civilians in recent times… I’m shocked beyond belief. The perpetrators are animals, inhuman, and worthy of contempt.”
He added that state authorities are working to provide immediate medical care to the injured and that he would return to Srinagar to personally monitor the situation.
Leaders from across the political spectrum have condemned the attack:
- Congress’ Vikar Rasool Wani called it a “conspiracy” against the region’s tourism economy.
- National Conference’s Imran Nabi Dar said, “This is a dark day for Kashmir and its tourism sector,” urging a thorough investigation.
- BJP’s Ravinder Raina blamed “Pakistani terrorists” for the attack and vowed that justice would be delivered swiftly.
Security forces and police were deployed immediately after the attack, and all exit routes have been secured. The government is expected to release more information as the investigation progresses. (ANI)
