Karachi [Pakistan], June 4 (ANI): Over 200 inmates escaped from Malir Jail in Karachi on Wednesday, with 111 still at large as authorities intensify efforts to recapture them. So far, 105 escapees have been apprehended, including 27 arrested recently, while some prisoners returned voluntarily, according to ARY News.
A large-scale search operation is underway, including police raids on the homes of fugitives. The jail administration has registered a case at Shah Latif Town police station concerning the jailbreak. Officials assured that inmates who surrender voluntarily will be treated leniently.
Police have formed dedicated teams to track down the escapees. However, concerns remain as two submachine guns (SMGs) seized by prisoners during the breakout are yet to be recovered, and those responsible for taking the weapons have not been identified, police said.
Many escaped inmates have returned to the jail through their families. An investigative team is collecting evidence from different areas within Malir Jail, such as barracks and offices, while interviewing prisoners about the arms snatching incident.
Investigation efforts face hurdles due to the lack of CCTV cameras at the facility. Jail staff statements have also been recorded as part of the inquiry.
Following the jailbreak, the Sindh government suspended the IG Jails Sindh, along with the DIG Jails and the Malir Jail Superintendent. Senior Sindh Minister Sharjeel Memon announced the formation of an inquiry committee to probe the incident. He also warned that fugitives who fail to surrender within 24 hours will face jail terms of up to seven years under jailbreak laws, while those who surrender promptly will receive lenient treatment.
One inmate, Tahir Khan, was killed during the escape attempt, and twelve others were injured and received medical treatment at a hospital.
This event highlights significant security challenges facing Karachi’s prison system. (ANI)
