Islamabad [Pakistan], December 2 (ANI): Members of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) staged protests outside the Islamabad High Court on Tuesday, demanding justice and political reforms amid concerns over the health of former Prime Minister Imran Khan, who remains in jail. Demonstrations took place despite Section 144 being in force, which prohibits gatherings of four or more people. Khan reportedly has had no contact with anyone for nearly a month, prompting calls for immediate action to ensure his well-being.
Minister of State for Interior Tallal Chaudhry stated that Section 144 would be strictly enforced in Islamabad and Rawalpindi, where PTI supporters plan additional demonstrations, including outside Adiala jail where Khan is held. He warned that action would be taken “without any discrimination” against those violating the order.
Security has been tightened in Rawalpindi, with road closures and checkpoints on routes to Adiala jail and Islamabad’s Red Zone. Chaudhry cited intelligence reports suggesting that terrorist groups often exploit political gatherings to spread fear and make headlines. He added that the Interior Ministry and Pakistan Telecommunication Authority are monitoring communications to prevent misuse of social media and VPNs, without disrupting legitimate operations.
Chaudhry also referenced a Peshawar High Court ruling banning the use of state resources for political purposes and cautioned officials against deploying government assets outside their jurisdictions without prior notice. He emphasized that Section 144 aims to protect public safety, recalling prior PTI protests, including the May 9 demonstrations, which he said had widespread consequences.
Rawalpindi police confirmed the deployment of at least 3,000 personnel across the city and said Section 144 would remain in effect for three days, restricting unlawful assemblies, rallies, and protests.
PTI leader Asad Qaiser said lawmakers plan to gather outside the IHC before marching to Adiala jail, criticizing the court and jail administration for failing to implement orders granting visitation rights. Barrister Gohar Ali Khan and other PTI figures are expected to join the demonstrations. Last week, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Sohail Afridi staged a sit-in outside Adiala jail after being denied access to Imran Khan for the eighth time.
Family members have reportedly been unable to meet Khan for several weeks, though government officials and PTI leaders maintain that he remains in good condition. (ANI)
