Poonch (Jammu and Kashmir) [India], May 6: A Pakistani national was apprehended by Indian Army personnel near the Line of Control (LoC) in the Poonch district of Jammu and Kashmir, Army officials confirmed on Tuesday. The individual is currently under investigation.
This development comes shortly after another Pakistani national was detained by Border Security Force (BSF) troops for illegally crossing the border in the Gurdaspur area of Punjab. The detainment occurred on the intervening night of May 3-4, while BSF troops were on routine patrol. The individual has since been handed over to Punjab Police for further investigation. The BSF is responsible for securing India’s 3,323 km-long border with Pakistan, which includes the LoC in Jammu and Kashmir and borders in Punjab, Rajasthan, and Gujarat.
This region remains highly sensitive and volatile due to historical tensions and ongoing security challenges.
On April 23, a BSF trooper was detained by Pakistan Rangers after inadvertently crossing the International Border near Firozpur in Punjab. The trooper was providing security to local farmers near the border fence when he accidentally stepped into Pakistani territory. Following the incident, the BSF issued an advisory to its personnel, urging greater vigilance during patrols to prevent such errors.
Although such border-crossing incidents are relatively common in the Punjab border region, where personnel from both sides occasionally cross inadvertently, tensions remain high. Typically, these matters are resolved through flag meetings. However, in this instance, Pakistan has not responded to India’s requests for such a meeting, likely due to the ongoing strain following the Pahalgam attack.
A senior BSF officer mentioned that despite these challenges, efforts to secure the return of the detained BSF jawan continue.
