New Delhi [India], December 8 (ANI): Union Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal met European Union (EU) Trade Commissioner Maros Sefcovic on Monday to review progress on the India-EU Free Trade Agreement (FTA) and explore ways to resolve outstanding issues to advance negotiations.
In a post on X, Goyal said, “Held a productive meeting with EU Trade and Economic Security Commissioner, Mr. @MarosSefcovic. We discussed the progress on the India-EU FTA and explored ways to resolve the issues to further advance the negotiations. Looking forward to continued cooperation towards a mutually beneficial India-EU FTA.”
Sefcovic, on a two-day visit to India for intensive trade and investment discussions, noted on X, “EU-India ties are growing fast—as they should between partners. But we’ve only scratched the surface. A commercially meaningful FTA would unlock enormous potential.”
This meeting follows Goyal’s visit to Brussels from October 26-28, where he engaged with Sefcovic on unresolved issues, including Non-Tariff Measures and new EU regulations. Both sides reaffirmed their commitment to concluding the India-EU FTA by the end of 2025. Discussions have focused on preferential treatment for India’s key requests, particularly in labour-intensive sectors, and on finalising non-sensitive industrial tariff lines. Sensitive issues such as Steel, Auto, and the EU Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM) remain under discussion.
Earlier in February, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen visited India and met Prime Minister Narendra Modi, highlighting the 20-year India-EU Strategic Partnership and over 30 years of India-EC Cooperation. Both leaders committed to strengthening the partnership for mutual and global benefits.
