New Delhi [India], September 18 (ANI): Prime Minister Narendra Modi held a telephonic conversation on Thursday with Nepal’s Interim Prime Minister Sushila Karki, extending condolences for the loss of lives during recent protests in the country and reaffirming India’s support for Nepal’s peace, stability, and progress, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said in a statement.
“Prime Minister congratulated Prime Minister Karki on her appointment and conveyed best wishes on behalf of the Government and people of India,” the MEA noted, adding that PM Modi expressed heartfelt condolences for the tragic loss of life during the demonstrations. He assured India’s readiness to continue working closely with Nepal to strengthen their special ties and to support Kathmandu’s efforts to restore peace and stability for the benefit of its citizens.
Nepal’s interim leader thanked PM Modi for India’s firm support and echoed the commitment to further enhance bilateral relations. According to the statement, PM Modi also extended felicitations ahead of Nepal’s upcoming National Day, and both leaders agreed to maintain regular contact.
A statement from Nepal’s Foreign Ministry said Prime Minister Karki conveyed her greetings to PM Modi on his 75th birthday and appreciated his message of solidarity. She underscored that the upcoming elections remain a top priority for her government, reflecting the aspirations of Nepal’s youth for accountable, responsive, and corruption-free governance. The Indian leader assured full cooperation in line with Nepal’s priorities.
Sushila Karki, Nepal’s first woman Chief Justice and now the country’s first woman Prime Minister, assumed office following widespread protests driven by a Gen Z-led movement against corruption and lack of accountability. The protests, which erupted after the government banned social media, turned violent on September 8, leaving 74 people dead when police used lethal force against demonstrators opposing former Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli’s regime.
Karki, 73, was sworn in as interim Prime Minister last Friday after protesters endorsed her as their candidate for the role, citing her integrity and independence. She will serve until March 2026, when elections are scheduled to choose a new executive head, marking the end of her interim tenure. (ANI)
