Accra [Ghana], July 3 (ANI): Prime Minister Narendra Modi concluded the first leg of his five-nation tour on Thursday, departing from Accra after a historic visit to Ghana. He now travels to Trinidad & Tobago for an official visit from July 3 to July 4 — his first to the Caribbean nation as Prime Minister.
Modi’s visit to Ghana was the first by an Indian Prime Minister in over 30 years. During his stay, he was warmly welcomed by the Indian diaspora and held wide-ranging bilateral talks with President John Mahama, reaffirming the strong partnership between the two countries.
In his meeting with President Mahama, Modi elevated India-Ghana relations to a Comprehensive Partnership, emphasizing the “immense scope” for collaboration in critical minerals, defence, maritime security, energy, and cultural linkages.
In a post on X, he wrote:
“India and Ghana also see immense scope in working closely in areas such as critical minerals, defence, maritime security and energy. Enhancing cultural linkages was also talked about.”
Calling his discussions with Mahama “extremely fruitful,” the Prime Minister said the two leaders explored ways to boost trade, economic ties, and cooperation in fintech, skill development, and healthcare.
One of the highlights of the visit was Modi being conferred Ghana’s highest civilian honour — The Officer of the Order of the Star of Ghana — by President Mahama. Calling it a “matter of immense pride,” he dedicated the award to the aspirations of the youth of both nations and the deep-rooted historic ties between India and Ghana.
Addressing Ghana’s Parliament, Modi noted the unbreakable friendship between the two countries, describing it as “sweeter than Ghana’s famous Sugar Loaf Pineapple.” He also paid homage to Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, Ghana’s founding President and a towering figure of the African independence movement, at the Nkrumah Memorial Park.
In his next stop, Trinidad & Tobago, Modi will continue to deepen India’s engagement with the Caribbean, marking the first bilateral Prime Ministerial visit to the country since 1999.
His five-nation tour will also take him to Argentina, Brazil, and Namibia. From July 5 to July 8, he will be in Brazil for the 17th BRICS Summit, followed by a state visit to the South American nation. (ANI)
