
Kananaskis [Canada], June 18 (ANI): Prime Minister Narendra Modi held separate pull-aside meetings with Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum and South Korean President Lee Jae-myung on the sidelines of the 51st G7 Summit in Kananaskis, Alberta, Canada.
The meeting with Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum marked the first interaction between the two leaders. They discussed ways to deepen bilateral cooperation across a range of sectors including trade, pharmaceuticals, science and technology, and digital innovation. The leaders also exchanged views on key global and regional matters, with a special focus on the priorities of the Global South.
The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) took to X to share details of the meeting, emphasizing the intent to strengthen India-Mexico ties. The MEA highlighted the discussion points, which centered on expanding cooperation and shared perspectives on global issues.
Prime Minister Modi also held talks with South Korean President Lee Jae-myung, continuing efforts to bolster India’s strategic partnership with South Korea. Both leaders discussed areas of mutual interest, including economic collaboration, technology exchange, and defense cooperation.
These bilateral meetings came shortly after Prime Minister Modi’s arrival at the Pomeroy Kananaskis Mountain Lodge, the summit venue, where he was received by Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney. This marks Modi’s sixth consecutive participation in a G7 Summit and his first visit to Canada in a decade.
He was given a ceremonial welcome at Calgary airport, where India’s Acting High Commissioner to Canada, Chinmoy Naik, and other officials greeted him. On his arrival, Modi expressed that his participation in the summit would focus on critical global matters, particularly issues of relevance to the Global South.
Taking to X, Prime Minister Modi posted about his arrival in Calgary and reiterated his intention to engage in meaningful dialogue with world leaders, while highlighting concerns and priorities of developing nations.
MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal confirmed that Modi will be actively participating in G7 discussions on energy security, innovation, technology, and infrastructure investment. The goal is to ensure inclusive access and affordability in the context of global energy transitions.
Prime Minister Modi’s presence at the G7 Summit comes at the invitation of Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney. The Indian leader is also scheduled to hold multiple bilateral meetings during the summit to advance India’s foreign policy objectives and international cooperation.
Modi’s current trip is part of a three-nation official tour that began with a visit to Cyprus and will conclude with a stop in Croatia. His return to Canada for the G7 comes at a pivotal time in bilateral relations, signaling an effort to re-engage after a period of diplomatic strain.
India is attending the G7 as a guest nation for the sixth consecutive year. The G7 Summit is a key annual meeting of leaders from the United States, United Kingdom, France, Germany, Japan, Italy, Canada, and the European Union, where global economic, political, and security issues are addressed.
