New Delhi [India], June 30 (ANI): Prime Minister Narendra Modi is scheduled to embark on a multi-nation tour in the first week of July, which includes visits to Ghana, Trinidad and Tobago, Argentina, Brazil, and Namibia. A key highlight of the visit will be his participation in the 17th BRICS Summit, to be held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, on July 5–6, officials from the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) confirmed on Monday.
Addressing a special media briefing, MEA Secretary (Economic Relations) Dammu Ravi stated, “The 17th BRICS Summit is taking place on July 5 and July 6 in Rio, Brazil.” He added that India is set to assume the BRICS Chairmanship at next year’s summit in Brazil.
“The theme of the Rio Summit is ‘Strengthening Global South Cooperation for Inclusive and Sustainable Governance,’ and India will be holding the chair of the BRICS next year,” Ravi said.
Prime Minister Modi is scheduled to arrive in Rio on the evening of July 5. The Summit will feature full BRICS members (now expanded to 10), 12 partner countries, 8 invited nations, and leaders from 7 regional and multilateral organizations.
Modi is visiting Brazil at the invitation of President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva. This will be his fourth visit to the country.
During the Summit, the leaders will discuss key global issues such as reform of global governance, peace and security, strengthening multilateralism, responsible use of artificial intelligence (AI), climate action, global health, and international economic and financial cooperation.
Outlining the Summit’s agenda, Secretary Ravi said the discussions on July 5 will begin with global governance reform, exclusively among full BRICS members. This will be followed by a working lunch focusing on peace and security.
“Post-lunch, the leaders will take up discussions on multilateralism, economic and financial matters, and AI. An official reception will follow in the evening,” he added.
On July 6, leaders will focus on climate issues, COP 30 (scheduled in Brazil later this year), and global health.
Ravi noted that while all decisions are taken by consensus, four key deliverables are expected:
- The BRICS Leaders’ Declaration
- A Leaders’ Statement on Global Governance and Artificial Intelligence
- A Framework Declaration on Climate Finance
- A Joint Commitment to BRICS Participation in the Elimination of Diseases
Additionally, four reports will be submitted to the leaders.
Speaking on the Prime Minister’s bilateral engagements, MEA Secretary (East) P. Kumaran said, “The BRICS Summit segment of the Prime Minister’s visit will be on July 5–6, and the State Visit segment will be on July 8.”
During the State Visit, Modi will hold bilateral talks with President Lula in Brasilia. The two leaders are expected to sign agreements on renewable energy, agricultural research, and security cooperation.
Ahead of the Brazil leg, PM Modi will visit Argentina on July 4 for bilateral discussions aimed at boosting economic and trade ties.
In addition to participating in the BRICS proceedings, Prime Minister Modi will hold several bilateral meetings with global leaders on the sidelines of the Summit.
During the visit to Brasilia, Modi and President Lula will explore opportunities to further deepen the Strategic Partnership between India and Brazil in key areas such as trade, defense, energy, space, science and technology, health, agriculture, and people-to-people exchanges. (ANI)
