Rio de Janeiro [Brazil], July 7 (ANI): Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday extended a warm welcome to Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto as a full member of BRICS, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said during a special media briefing on the sidelines of the 17th BRICS Summit in Brazil.
MEA Secretary (Economic Relations) Dammu Ravi highlighted the significance of Prime Minister Modi’s participation, noting that Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva placed “great importance” on India’s role at the summit.
“Today was a full-day program. There were three sessions with a working lunch. The Honourable Prime Minister also had a few bilateral and pull-aside meetings during the day. He thanked President Lula for the warm hospitality extended to him and his delegation. He also welcomed the Indonesian President for joining as a full member of BRICS and appreciated the participation of partner countries at this summit,” Ravi told reporters.
Ravi added that PM Modi’s visit was particularly meaningful as India, a founding member of BRICS, is set to assume the chairmanship of the grouping next year. “Honourable Prime Minister’s participation assumes greater significance against this backdrop,” he said, underscoring India’s consistent engagement in BRICS summits since its inception.
The two-day summit, hosted in Rio de Janeiro, comes amid what Ravi described as “fast-changing global developments,” with the theme “Strengthening Global South Cooperation for Inclusive and Sustainable Governance.”
Ravi also noted the robust turnout at this year’s summit, which featured participation from 11 permanent BRICS members, nine partner countries, eight invitee nations, and seven heads of international organizations — making it significantly larger in scale compared to last year’s meeting.
Meanwhile, the Indian Embassy in Indonesia posted on X: “PM Modi and President Prabowo among world leaders at the BRICS Summit 2025 in Brazil — strengthening India-Indonesia ties on the global stage.”
India is expected to take over the BRICS chair in 2026, continuing its active role in shaping the bloc’s agenda. (ANI)
