Vatican City, May 11 (ANI): In his inaugural Sunday address, newly elected Pope Leo XIV, the first US-born pontiff, expressed his hopes for global peace, addressing conflicts in Gaza and Ukraine, and notably welcoming the recent ceasefire between India and Pakistan.
Expressing optimism, Pope Leo XIV stated, “I am pleased by the announcement of the ceasefire between India and Pakistan, and I hope that through the forthcoming negotiations a lasting agreement will soon be reached.” The ceasefire between the two nations took effect on May 10, marking a significant step toward de-escalation after recent hostilities.
Turning his attention to Ukraine, the Pope called for an “authentic, just, and lasting peace as soon as possible” and emphasized the importance of freeing prisoners and reuniting displaced children with their families. He also urged an immediate ceasefire in the Gaza Strip, expressing deep sadness over the continued violence and calling for the provision of humanitarian aid to affected civilians and the release of hostages.
Pope Leo XIV, born Robert Prevost in Chicago, made history by becoming the first American to be elected as Pope. His election on Thursday brought a wave of excitement among Catholics in the Americas. During his first formal meeting with cardinals, he was met with a standing ovation.
Explaining his chosen papal name, Pope Leo XIV said it reflected his intention to follow the path of Pope Leo XIII, known for addressing social issues during the first Industrial Revolution. He highlighted the need to respond to contemporary challenges posed by technological advancements, including artificial intelligence, while safeguarding human dignity, justice, and labor rights.
Pope Leo XIII, who served as the head of the Roman Catholic Church from 1878 to 1903, is remembered for his significant contributions to Catholic social teaching, most notably through his 1891 encyclical “Rerum Novarum” (“Of Revolutionary Change”). Pope Leo XIV’s commitment to social justice and reform signals a continuation of Pope Francis’s legacy, as the new pontiff emphasized the church’s responsibility to address modern social issues.
In his address, delivered in fluent Italian, Pope Leo XIV wore the traditional white papal robes, underlining his commitment to the continuity of church reforms while advocating for peace and social justice worldwide. (ANI)
