
New Delhi [India], April 28 (ANI): Former Bihar Deputy Chief Minister Sushil Kumar Modi was posthumously awarded the Padma Bhushan for his contributions to Public Affairs during a ceremony held on Monday. President Droupadi Murmu presented the prestigious award to his wife, Jessie Sushil Modi, at Rashtrapati Bhawan.
Sushil Kumar Modi, a towering figure in Bihar’s political landscape, passed away on May 13, 2024, at the All-India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in Delhi after a prolonged seven-month battle with cancer. He was 72.
Throughout a distinguished career spanning over three decades, Modi held numerous important positions, serving as an MLA, MLC, and as a member of both the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha. He notably served as Bihar’s Deputy Chief Minister from 2005 to 2013 and again from 2017 to 2020, playing a key role in the state’s governance and political transformation.
In addition to Modi, former Speaker of the Uttar Pradesh Legislative Assembly Hriday Narayan Dikshit was honored with the Padma Shri for his contributions to Literature and Education.
The Padma Bhushan awardees this year include PR Sreejesh (Sports) from Kerala, Pankaj Patel (Trade and Industry) from Gujarat, Pankaj Udhas (Posthumous) (Art) from Maharashtra, Ram Bahadur Rai (Literature and Education–Journalism) from Uttar Pradesh, Sadhvi Ritambhara (Social Work) from Uttar Pradesh, S Ajith Kumar (Art) from Tamil Nadu, Shekhar Kapur (Art) from Maharashtra, Shobana Chandrakumar (Art) from Tamil Nadu, Vinod Dham (Science and Engineering) from the United States, and Sushil Kumar Modi (Public Affairs) from Bihar.
The Padma Awards—Padma Shri, Padma Bhushan, and Padma Vibhushan—are among India’s highest civilian honors, recognizing outstanding contributions across various fields, including art, social work, public affairs, science and engineering, trade and industry, medicine, and literature.
Announced annually on Republic Day, these awards are conferred by the President of India at a ceremonial event at Rashtrapati Bhawan, typically held in March or April.
