Lisbon [Portugal], April 7 (ANI): President Droupadi Murmu was awarded the “Key of Honour” of Lisbon City on Monday during a ceremony at the historic Camara Municipal de Lisboa (City Hall). The event was attended by prominent citizens, members of the diplomatic corps, and representatives of the Indian and Indo-Portuguese communities.
In a post on X, President Murmu expressed gratitude for the warm gesture, commending the people of Lisbon for their “affectionate nature, open-mindedness, spirit of tolerance, and respect for diversity.”
During her remarks, President Murmu highlighted India’s vision of becoming a developed nation—‘Viksit Bharat’—by 2047, emphasizing a prosperous, inclusive, and human-centric approach to growth. She also underscored the longstanding cultural and diplomatic ties between India and Portugal, calling the European nation a vital partner in India’s outreach to the EU and Lusophone countries.
Earlier in the day, President Murmu held extensive talks with Portuguese President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, discussing a wide range of bilateral and global issues. The two leaders reaffirmed their commitment to deepening cooperation in trade, investment, IT, renewable energy, and connectivity.
This marks the first Indian Presidential visit to Portugal in 27 years, following President K. R. Narayanan’s visit in 1998. The visit is aimed at further strengthening the strategic partnership and enriching the cultural and economic engagement between the two nations.
