Criticizing the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, Trump stated that Putin is “needlessly killing a lot of people” and emphasized that the casualties include civilians, not just soldiers. “Missiles and drones are being shot into cities in Ukraine, for no reason whatsoever,” he said.
The President reiterated his longstanding view that Putin seeks “ALL of Ukraine, not just a piece of it,” warning that such ambitions could result in “the downfall of Russia.”
Trump also directed criticism at Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, asserting that his rhetoric is exacerbating the conflict. “Everything out of his mouth causes problems. I don’t like it, and it better stop,” Trump said.
Calling the war avoidable, Trump stated, “This is a war that would never have started if I were President.” He distanced himself from the origins of the conflict, framing it instead as “Zelenskyy’s, Putin’s, and Biden’s War — not ‘Trump’s’.”
He concluded by saying he is working to “help put out the big and ugly fires” that he claims have been ignited by “Gross Incompetence and Hatred.”
The remarks come amid heightened global concern over the intensifying violence in Ukraine and its wider geopolitical consequences.
Earlier, on May 24, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy reported a wave of Russian drone and missile attacks in Kyiv, resulting in civilian casualties and significant destruction.
Posting on X, Zelenskyy said, “Fragments of Russian missiles and drones are being cleared in Kyiv. Rescue and emergency operations are ongoing at the sites of strikes and debris impacts—wherever they are needed. There were many fires and explosions in the city overnight. Once again, residential buildings, cars, businesses have been damaged. Sadly, there are injuries.”
He added, “It was a difficult night for all of Ukraine—250 strike drones, the absolute majority of them Iranian ‘Shaheds,’ and 14 ballistic missiles. The Odesa, Vinnytsia, Sumy, Kharkiv, Donetsk, Kyiv, Dnipro regions suffered damages. All strikes targeted civilians. There are fatalities. My condolences to the families and loved ones.”
Zelenskyy reiterated Ukraine’s calls for ceasefires and increased sanctions support from the United States, Europe, and its allies.
