Pune (Maharashtra) [India], June 16 (ANI): Search and rescue operations resumed on Monday near the Indrayani River in Talegaon, Pune district, following the collapse of an old bridge on Sunday afternoon. Two dedicated teams have been deployed to intensify efforts to locate any individuals still missing, despite ongoing rainfall in the region hampering visibility and movement.
Pune District Collector Jitendra Dudi confirmed that the incident claimed four lives and left 51 others injured. The deceased have been identified as Chandrakant Salve, Rohit Mane, and Vihaan Mane, while the fourth victim—a male—remains unidentified.
Speaking to ANI, Collector Dudi said, “A total of 51 people are injured and admitted to different hospitals, receiving treatment, and four individuals have died. Three were identified and one body remains unidentified.” He added, “The incident occurred at 3:15 p.m., and we were informed by 3:30 p.m. About 250 personnel were immediately dispatched, and the rescue operation began. So far, approximately 38 people have been rescued.”
One survivor, who sustained injuries in the collapse, recounted the terrifying moments leading up to the tragedy. According to him, a large crowd had formed on the narrow bridge due to a traffic jam from vehicles moving in both directions. The heavy congestion caused people to congregate at the center of the structure, which ultimately gave way under the pressure.
“There was a huge crowd on the bridge. The road was jammed due to vehicles coming from both sides. The crowd gathered at one place, and the bridge collapsed. People standing in the middle of the bridge were swept away. We fell on the stones and got injured,” he told ANI.
Authorities confirmed that all those injured are currently receiving medical attention in various hospitals. As of now, no additional missing persons have been reported.
The district administration, in coordination with emergency response agencies, is continuing the search operation and will assess the structural integrity of other nearby bridges to prevent further incidents. (ANI)
