Ahmedabad (Gujarat) [India], April 9 (ANI): Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Wednesday delivered a sharp critique of the Modi-led BJP government, warning that India could soon face a “financial storm” due to newly imposed 26% reciprocal tariffs by the United States.
Speaking at the All India Congress Committee (AICC) session in Ahmedabad, Gandhi accused the government of orchestrating a “drama” around the Waqf (Amendment) Bill to divert attention from economic troubles and alleged mishandling of foreign policy.
“The reality is that a financial storm is about to hit… Crores of people will face loss. Unemployment is at a 50-year high. Where is PM Modi?” Gandhi asked.
Referring to Prime Minister Modi’s visit to the US in February, he questioned the absence of public response when former US President Donald Trump announced tariffs on Indian goods.
“This time, Trump didn’t hug Modi… Instead, he imposed tariffs. And PM Modi didn’t utter a word,” he remarked, claiming the silence indicated a failure to protect national economic interests.
On the Waqf Bill and Religious Freedom
Gandhi strongly opposed the recently passed Waqf (Amendment) Bill, calling it a direct attack on religious freedom and the Constitution.
“The Waqf Bill is not just about one religion. It is an attack on the idea of India… on the freedom of religion enshrined in our Constitution,” he said, alleging that it was used as a distraction from larger economic concerns.
Institutional Control and Caste Census
Accusing the BJP and RSS of undermining democracy, Gandhi said:
“They want to end democracy… They want to control all institutions and hand over the country’s wealth to Ambani and Adani.”
He reiterated the Congress Party’s demand for a caste census, criticizing the government for allegedly stalling it.
“We want to know who has what share in this country. PM Modi and the RSS refused to conduct the caste census because they don’t want to reveal the true status of backward, tribal, and Dalit communities,” he said, promising that Congress would pass the caste census law if given the mandate.
Temple Purification Row
Gandhi also condemned BJP leaders over the recent temple purification controversy after Dalit leader Tikaram Jully visited a temple in Rajasthan.
“This is not our religion. Cleaning a temple after a Dalit visits is an insult to our values,” he said, calling for greater unity and equality.
