Srinagar (Jammu and Kashmir) [India], April 25 (ANI): Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, arrived in Srinagar on Friday to visit those injured in the recent terrorist attack in Pahalgam. The Congress party confirmed that Gandhi is scheduled to visit Government Medical College (GMC), Anantnag, to check on the condition of the injured survivors.
“Today, LoP Rahul Gandhi is scheduled to visit GMC, Anantnag to enquire about the health of those injured in the Pahalgam terror attack,” the Congress party stated in a post on X (formerly Twitter).
On April 22, terrorists opened fire on tourists at the Baisaran meadow in Pahalgam, killing 25 Indian nationals and one Nepali citizen and injuring several others. The heinous act has sparked nationwide outrage and prompted a series of diplomatic and security measures by the Indian government.
Senior Congress leader Salman Khurshid highlighted the purpose of Gandhi’s visit, saying, “Rahul ji is going to Kashmir and is also going to Pahalgam today to console the people who have suffered in the Pahalgam terror attack. We have said that we will stand by the government.”
Gandhi, who was on an official visit to the United States, cut his trip short and returned to New Delhi early Thursday morning following news of the attack.
On Thursday, the Central government convened an all-party meeting to discuss the security situation and formulate a unified response. After the meeting, Gandhi affirmed the opposition’s solidarity with the government: “Everyone condemned the Pahalgam terrorist attack. The opposition has given full support to the government in taking any action.”
In response to the attack, India has taken stringent diplomatic measures against Pakistan, including suspending the Indus Waters Treaty of 1960 and closing the Integrated Check Post at Attari. The Indian Army remains on high alert and has launched multiple operations to track down and neutralize the terrorists responsible for the attack.
