Raipur (Chhattisgarh), August 16 (ANI): Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha and Congress MP Rahul Gandhi will launch his ‘Voter Adhikar Yatra’ from Bihar’s Sasaram district on August 17, protesting alleged “vote theft” and irregularities in the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls.
Congress leader Bhupesh Baghel told ANI that Gandhi will cover 1,300 kilometres during the 17-day campaign. “Tomorrow, Rahul Gandhi is travelling from Sasaram to Patna. This journey will last 17 days, during which he will walk 1,300 kilometres. This Voter Adhikar Yatra is a journey against vote theft. This is a fight against people who are forming government after doing vote chori,” Baghel said.
On August 14, Gandhi announced the yatra against the SIR of electoral rolls and appealed to citizens to join the “people’s movement.”
Taking to X, he wrote: “From August 17, with #VoterAdhikarYatra, we are launching a direct fight against vote theft from the soil of Bihar. This is not just an election issue – it is a decisive battle to protect democracy, the constitution, and the principle of ‘one man, one vote.’ We will ensure a clean voter list across the entire country. Youth, workers, farmers – every citizen, rise and join this people’s movement. This time, the defeat of vote thieves – the victory of the people, the victory of the constitution.”
The announcement comes amid ongoing protests by INDIA bloc leaders against alleged irregularities in the electoral rolls.
Earlier today, Gandhi shared a spoof video inspired by the film Laapataa Ladies to reiterate Congress’s accusations against the Election Commission. The clip portrays a man filing a theft complaint at a police station, revealing that his “vote” has been stolen. The video concludes with the message: “Theft of your vote is theft of your right.”
On August 7, Gandhi accused the Election Commission of “choreographed” elections, citing Congress research that alleged the theft of over 1,00,000 votes in Karnataka’s Mahadevapura Assembly constituency. The Election Commission has since asked him to submit a signed declaration to substantiate his claims.
