New Delhi [India], July 13 (ANI): Following positive results from pilot installations, Indian Railways has decided to equip all passenger coaches with CCTV cameras to enhance passenger safety, the Ministry of Railways announced in a press release on Sunday.
“This move will significantly improve passenger safety. Miscreants and organized gangs often take advantage of gullible passengers. With cameras, such incidents will be significantly reduced. To preserve passenger privacy, CCTV cameras will be installed in the common movement area near the doors,” the statement said.
Union Minister for Railways Ashwini Vaishnaw and Minister of State for Railways Ravneet Singh Bittu reviewed the progress of CCTV installation in locomotives and coaches during a meeting on Saturday with senior Railway Board officials.
Officials informed that successful trials had been conducted in locomotives and coaches of Northern Railway. The Union Minister approved the plan to install CCTV cameras in all 74,000 coaches and 15,000 locomotives.
Each passenger coach will be fitted with four dome-type CCTV cameras — two at each entrance. Each locomotive will be equipped with six cameras: one at the front, one at the rear, one on each side, and one dome camera in each cab, along with two desk-mounted microphones.
Officials confirmed that the cameras will meet the latest specifications and will be STQC certified. The Union Minister emphasized deploying best-in-class equipment and ensuring high-quality footage even for trains running at speeds exceeding 100 kmph and in low-light conditions.
He also encouraged officials to explore leveraging artificial intelligence on the data captured by CCTV cameras in collaboration with the IndiaAI mission.
The installation of cameras in the common movement areas of coaches aims to bolster passenger safety while preserving privacy, helping authorities identify and deter miscreants. (ANI)
