New Delhi, April 30 (ANI): Union Defence Minister Rajnath Singh will represent India at the upcoming Victory Day Parade in Moscow, sources confirmed to ANI on Wednesday.
Reports indicate that Russia had extended an invitation to Prime Minister Narendra Modi to attend the event. However, the Indian government communicated earlier that Defence Minister Rajnath Singh would instead represent the country at the Victory Day Parade.
The Victory Day celebrations commemorate the Soviet Union’s victory over Nazi Germany in World War II and are marked by a grand military parade in Moscow.
Rajnath Singh had last visited Russia in December 2023, for the commissioning ceremony of the Indian Navy’s INS Tushil in Kaliningrad. During the visit, he paid tribute at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in Moscow, honoring Soviet soldiers who perished during the war. He also interacted with the Indian community in Russia.
INS Tushil, a multi-role stealth-guided missile frigate of the Krivak III class under Project 1135.6, was commissioned on December 9. This class includes six frigates already in service with the Indian Navy, with three ships built in St. Petersburg and three constructed at the Yantar shipyard in Kaliningrad.
In the meantime, Russian President Vladimir Putin is expected to visit India, following an invitation from Prime Minister Modi. Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov confirmed this in March, stating that preparations for the visit were underway.
Last year in July, Prime Minister Modi visited Russia to attend the 22nd India-Russia Annual Summit at President Putin’s invitation.
